You should NEVER be alone in the workshop without a PI (Prototyping Instructor) or other appropriate supervision. Please abide by any guidelines set by the makerspace you are in.
When injured, you should do the following:
If able to, safely turn off any powered machinery you are using and stop what you are doing.
Alert a PI or whoever is supervising you. If you cannot do so, ask your closest peer.
Stay calm, you're going to be okay.
Typical first aid procedures:
The wound will be rinsed under tap water.
The area AROUND the wound will be cleaned with either soap, hydrogen peroxide, or alcohol. Do not allow these substances into the wound.
The wound will be cleaned with a saline solution.
Neosporin or an equivalent anti-bacterial cream will then be applied to the wound.
The wound will then be bandaged appropriately.
In case of bleeding, gentle pressure will be applied.
Your emergency contact may be informed so they can take appropriate next steps.
Sit down, take some deep breathes, have a snack and/or some water, and have a rest
In the unlikely event of a major injury or emergency, appropriate first-aid actions will be taken, and 911 (or GTPD, 404-894-2500, if on GT campus) will be called if necessary. If further treatment is needed for a smaller injury you can be taken to Urgent Care.
When you see someone else injured you should do the following:
If any machinery needs to be turned off press the closest emergency stop button. This avoids the risk of additional injury.
Keep calm and alert a PI or whoever is supervising the space.
Do not panic, keep calm and comfort whoever had the injury.
If necessary assist with first aid, help guide whoever is injured to a table and chair next to a sink. After any needed treatment and communications, go grab them a snack and/or some water in case they need it.
