For any soldering (and any equipment use in general), properly wear SAFETY GLASSES/GOGGLES and maintain a CLEAN workspace!
Soldering is analogous to hot glue but for electrical connections. The content below will introduce you to the technique, but the best way to learn is to practice yourself, whether in a makerspace (under supervision) or at one of our Fall Training events!
Here is a soldering tutorial from iFixit.
Note: Some makerspaces will NOT have flux, as demonstrated in this video. Flux is not necessary for soldering, though it will require more practice without flux.
This soldering tutorial, from oneTesla, showcases a solderable breadboard, also known as a perfboard, DOT PCB, or prototyping board. It is great for prototyping circuits that cannot be too flimsy.
Here is a video about the soldering bench at the Invention Studio from their YouTube channel!
PRO TIP: Have a scrap piece of cardboard underneath your soldering to collect any leftover solder. Carefully throw it in the trash when done!
Note: you still need to solder on a good work area, such as a flat, hard wooden surface.
Below is a quick overview of the soldering. You do not need to understand everything right now; we will cover each part during our in-person training.
